Member of Parliament Dato Seri Tiong King Sing called on the people not
to be misled by the opposition party into believing that the government
was incapable because of the hike of fuel prices that triggered a general
hike of prices in the market.
Speaking at the Hakka folk song contest here last week hosted by the dialectal clan association of Sarawak last week, Tiong, who is also a Justice of the Peace, said the hike in fuel prices and the inflation that followed was a global matter that was beyond the control of the Malaysian Government. He was disappointed that the opposition party had stirred the issue in view of the coming general election to fish for votes. "But, what have they achieved in this? What good does it make in creating lies? What they are doing will only cause unrest. They will not get any problems solved." He cited an example in the protest of Hindraf, saying that some protesters had made use of the opportunity to loot a convenient store at a petrol station, causing the owner to suffer heavy losses. "This is only a tip of the iceberg of what an unrest will cause, and in incidents like this, should the opposition party claim responsibility?" In the Hindraf incident, he said the people had also been misled into believing that through the protest and a law suit, they would be compensated RM1 million by the British Government for having invited their ancestors to settle here. He hoped such an irresponsible mentality would not spread to the Chinese community. Tiong was unhappy that there were people who would not work hard to serve the people, but, when a general election came, they would shout slogans and create issues to fish for votes. He called on the Chinese community to stand united, saying that disunity would only destroy them. On the hike in electricity charges, Tiong said the amount that the locals paid was cheaper than those in many countries because our government was subsidising. |
