06/04/2008: Recycling centre urged to relocate
Business an environmental hazard to neighbours: MP Tiong King Sing JP

  • INCONSIDERATE ACTION: Huge metal pieces strewn on the road and other items stored for recycling at the house compound.

BINTULU: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing called on an operator of a recycling centre at Jalan Bintulu-Miri to move his business out of a housing estate as his business operation there has become an environmental hazard to the neighbours.

In his press statement received yesterday, Tiong, said he had made a similar appeal to the operator through the media recently, but the man had turned a deaf ear to it.

He said it was illegal for industrial activity to be conducted permanently in a residential site, and that he had received numerous complaints from the residents there.

He called on the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to look into the complaints of the people, but he hoped the operator would move out before any action was taken against him.

According to the neighbours, the operator had not only strewn recycled items, mainly metal pieces and structures, all over the compound of his rented premises but also on the road causing traffic obstruction.
Tiong said in a few occasions fire nearly broke out from the house.

"Fortunately, firemen came in time to prevent it from spreading"

He was disappointed that the operator had failed to heed his advice.

"According to the neighbours, he has carried out his business there for a few years."

He said he had brought the plea of the people to the authority, but, the situation had not improved.

He added there were other similar situations elsewhere in Bintulu, but, the operators had heeded the advice of the authority and stopped operating in the residential areas.
