28/12/2008: Tiong urges PLUS to review its toll charges

KUCHING:  Chairman of Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club, Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing, said the management company of North-South Expressway PLUS should review the so-called “New Year Joy” toll savings announced last Wednesday.

He regretted that the discounts only applied to Class I vehicles, namely, private cars but not other types of commercial vehicle.

“Furthermore, discounts are only available for those who travel between midnight and 7 am.”

Tiong said he had received numerous complaints stating that PLUS should be more considerate as freight was one of the key factors contributing to increasing prices of goods.

He said the company should show its sincere initiative to jointly work with the government in combating the inflation ahead.

Referring to the report published on national dailies, Tiong said the company had achieved its target of traffic flows ahead the schedule, thus a better proposal should be announced instead of the toll savings.  He stressed BNBBC would like to see the 10% toll discount being applied to all types of vehicle, not only from midnight to 7am but 24 hours daily, if possible.

Another suggestion would be to reduce the present toll rate, added Tiong.

He said both parties (The Ministry and the company) could also jointly seek a win-win solution.

“I do agree with the incentive part of PLUS’ social responsibility scheme, yet they should come up with more reasonable and sociable proposals to assist our nation in economic recession.”  Tiong also urged the company to reveal details of traffic figure achieved so far by the company.
