MIRI: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) is retaining its incumbents to defend their respective seats in the 12th Parliamentary Election.

The party president, Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom said the list of candidates would be forwarded to the Prime Minister and BN Chairman, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Tuesday.

The four incumbents are Datuk Dr. Tike Lafe for Mas Gading, Jelaing Mersat (Saratok), Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (Bintulu) and Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan (Baram).

Mawan, who is also the Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation, revealed this in an interview after officiating  the Biennial General Meeting (BGM) of Dayak Association of Miri (DAM) at Gymkhana Club of Miri yesterday.

Commenting on the list of incumbents fielded by the party, Mawan said he was confident that the incumbents could win and thus, continue  giving quality services to the people and country.

He advised the electorate in the state to vote wisely for candidates from  parties which had been able to unite the people.

Mawan, in his earlier address, advised  villagers  who illegally occupied government land in the state to build their longhouses to apply to the state government for permits.

He said the state government would consider genuine cases.

He was  replying to a request in a speech made by DAM President, Alexander Isut, that the government recognised longhouses especially along the Miri/Bintulu Road that were built on government land.

On requests for more land to be allocated for cemeteries to ease congestion, Mawan he would bring up the matter to the State Cabinet soon.
