07/02/2008: Chinese urged to open doors, hearts
Open house concept must be maintained for posterity: Tiong

BINTULU: Bintulu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called on the Chinese community to open their doors and hearts to well-wishers, especially from other races, during the coming Lunar New Year celebrations.

In his Chinese New Year message yesterday, he said the unique open house concept of Malaysian society must be maintained for posterity, adding that this had always been the pride of the nation as people from all walks of life and station come together to celebrate the festivals of each other.

"The Chinese New Year celebrations is no longer a joy that is celebrated only by the Chinese, but by all Malaysians."

He said the practice of opening doors to fellow Malaysians was a sign of opening hearts.

Tiong, who is also a Justice of the Peace, said Malaysians had worked hard to protect the colours of their cultures and the freedom of religion.

"By living together, we have painted a unique picture of harmony that others are emulating, and we must keep this spirit in all festive celebrations"

He said the people must work with tolerance, understanding and forgiveness for things that blocked their growth.

"Leave the past behind and walk on to create a better future"

He said if there was any dissatisfaction, the parties involved must look for a way out.

Ushering in the Year of the Earth Rat, he called on the people to look forward with hope and aspiration and grow with the BN government.

Looking back, he said there had been both sad and happy moments.

"Among the glorious moments, we have sent the first astronaut into space and celebrated the golden jubilee of nationhood.

He said the nation had also shone in sports and other achievements.

"Then, there were demonstrations, natural disasters and global hikes in oil prices."

"But, be it happy or sad, we have made it through another year to keep our economic and social development in shape"

To the people of Bintulu, he thanked them for rallying their support behind the BN government. ¡°Thank you for being with us.

"We have built a conducive home together. We have grown together"

To the association members, Tiong said he was touched that they had always made him part of their community celebrations.

"You have given me a chance to meet the people and listen to their views. I must say that I have learnt from them by just listening to their advice and guidance"

For their activities which Tiong could not attend because of commitment elsewhere, he apologised, saying it had always been his desire to be with the people.

 "I pray for your understanding"

Tiong said he would make time for the people, because only in unity could they grow together.
