  • Sep 24 2008: Tiong: Straight to solve Sex Video Clip among Student
  • Don't Misuse Headmasters' Council

  •

SIBU: Barisan Nasional Backbencher Club chairman Dato Seri Tiong King Sing said yesterday he had chosen to submit the sex video clips involving Sarawak students to the Deputy Minister of Education and his senior officers as he failed to push through this concern in the Sarawak Education Department.

As the war of words continue between him and those in the teaching profession over his (Tiong's) call on the state education director to step down for his failed handling of these sex video clips, he said yesterday he was totally disappointed with people who seemed more interested in apple polishing than in concerning over the deteriorating morality of our students.

"Instead of working together to help our children in schools, some teachers and headmasters prefer supporting State education director Dr. Julaihi Bujang for his failed efforts."

Tiong has called on Julaihi to step down for his inefficient dealing with the sex video clips , and an objection came from the Sarawak Teachers' Union on Monday.

This was followed by another objection from Sarawak Headmasters' Council on Tuesday. Its chairman Abang Sapali Abang Sepawi claimed it was unfair to point fingers on an individual because improving the education system was a collective effort.

In a press statement yesterday, Tiong, who is also the Bintulu MP, said Abang Sapali, being in the teaching profession, should have led by example in calling on teachers, headmasters and members of the Parent-teacher Association to help our students.

He said he was disappointed that the irresponsible one in such handling had hidden behind others while making use of them to hit out at him (Tiong).

Tiong said the video clips had caused much concern among the parents.

In one video images believed to have been captured through handphone, he said it showed teenagers involved in the sexual act while in another, a girl involved in the act with more than one boy. "All of them were in school uniforms."

He called on Abang Sapali not to blindly follow the president of Sarawak Teachers' Union William Ghani in attacking him without understanding the full situation.

He said before he called on Dr. Julaihi to step down, he had given him sufficient time to investigate.
"But, I am disappointed with his lukewarm response. He said he had heard of the incidents, but, he could do nothing because there was no evidence."

He said in the clips, it was clear that the students were directing the acts and were themselves involved in them.

"Parents in Sarawak are heart broken. I have received so many calls from them, and they are supporting me for speaking out."

He said he wanted to ask Dr. Julaihi, William Gahni and Abang Sapali when they should start concerning for our students.

"Wait until the sexual transmitted diseases or AIDS infection are common among them, or when many of them have become single parents?"

Since Abang Sapali said education was the role of all, "then, start doing something now and stop apple polishing.

"There is no time to waste in helping our young ones. Prevention is better than cure."

He said if teachers and headmasters in Sarawak only knew how to polish apple, "what future do we have for our children?"
