BINTULU:The alleged involvement of certain grassroot leader of Sarawak Progressive Democratic party (SPDP) in gangsterism was not discussed at the party's recent annual general assembly due to lack of evidence.

SPDP Treasurer-General, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said they would need to gather more facts about the allegation and would not be making any conclusion of it until the investigation had been completed.

"As we are still carrying out our investigation, we could not make any judgment about the issue. We need to wait for more evidences before deciding on the next course of actions," he told reporters here on Sunday.

He was responding to a query on the reason for the issue was not touched at the assembly that was held last Saturday in Kuching.

The issue came to light late June this year when Tiong, who is also the party's liaision chief for Sarawak's Central Region, revealed information that he received of a grassroot leaderw was collaborating with gangsters.

It was learnt then that the leader had gone to the extent of using political influence to negotiate with police for the release of certain known gangsters that had been arrested.

Tiong, who is also the Bintulu Member of Parliament, said there had been no other physical evidences provided to him apart from that information.

Nevertheless, the situation would not put a stop for the party from taking the necessary measures as he revealed: "We have our own way of monitoring our members and leaders."

Still insisting not to reveal the name of the alleged leader involved, Tiong added that the activities of the person concerned were currently checked to ensure it would not jeopardize the party.

"He is still free to go on carrying political works for the party but we at the top leadership is checking so that whatever he do would be for the best of the party and the rakyat," he added.
