13/07/2005:40 Recognised Higher Private Institutes in Sarawak, 1 in Bintulu, Tiong told.

Bintulu:Only 40 private institutions of higher learning in Sarawak had been approved to operate and offering 263 courses mainly in the field of information communication technology or business.

Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Dr Shafie Mohd Salleh told the current parliament that only one such institution, Kolej Sedamai, had been approved to conduct three study programs in Bintulu.

He was replying to a question by Bintulu Member of Parliament, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing who wanted to know the number of such institutions that had obtained approvals from the Ministry.

Shafie explained that all private higher learning institutions were governed under the Private Higher Learning Institution Act 1996 and could only operate through the approval of the Ministry.

In addition, the Ministry would continue to monitor the activities of the instituitions while checking the possible existence of unapproved private institutions .

Any private higher learning institutions found to be operating illegally could be fined up to RM200,000 while the operator could be liable to imprisonment of up to two years.
