16/07/2005: Rural Folk's Well-being Given Priority: Tiong stressed in Niah Sawai Land Dispute

BINTULU: The government through its agencies and departments will always strive to ensure that the well-being of the rural people are given priority in spite of having to deal with some who might be occupying State land.

Bintulu Member of Parliament Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing JP, said the sincerity of the government to help rural people should not be disputed as they had always tried to find amicable solutions to the people's problems.

"The rural people have to understand that they just could not afford to be confraontational, but to work together with the government to achieve a win-win situation, " he added.

He said this in his message delivered by his special assistant, Teo Ho Ping, during a dialogue session between the government agencies and several longhouses Niah yesterday.

Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) and Tiong's People Service Centre initiated the dialogue to bring the parties involved in a dispute over several lots of land in Niah.

The dispute emerged after some of the residents from the affected longhouses disagreed to the settlements proposed for vacating the lots that had been declared as State Land (Lot 8 block 15 Sawai Land District). 

There were a total of 7 longhouses, estimated 200 door with more than 1000 residents  affected under the estate development scheme.

For residents who disputed the status of the land in question, Tiong hoped that they would be able to submit documents to substantiate their rights or by getting the endorsement from local community leaders such as Pemanca, Penghulu, Temenggong etc.

He also urged those who claimed their lands for Temuda Land, Pemakai Menua, NCR status, they could not merely by saying, pointing and claiming only.

He also requested the agencies involved to give ample period for the matter to be settled to satisfy all parties concerned.

"The government is always prepared to listen to your grievances and find the best solutions to benefit everyone.  But you also must be prepared to co-operated as well, he added.

Beside the 2 weeks grace period, Tiong said that the party  would approach the relevant parties to extend it for a month.  

The affected residents will also be arranged to meet the SPDP paty President, Datuk William Mawan Anak Ikom to jointly seek for amicable solution...END.
