27/07/2005:BDA Appoints SWM For Waste Management Job

BINTULU:The Bintulu Development Authorithy (BDA) yesterday announced the official appointment of Sarawak Wastes Management Sdn. Bhd. (SWM) to implement the Integrated Solid Wastes Management System (ISMWS) here with effect form August 1.

Under the system, all domestic and commercial wastes in Bintulu will be collected and transported by SWM Sdn. Bhd.'s partner and operating company, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd., either direct to the landfill for sorting, treatment and disposal or to a transit station fort shorting or segregation before being dispose of at the respective disposal facilities.

BDA General Manager Tuan Haji Mohidin Ishak also disclosed the BDA would be utilising the fund allocated by the Federal Government under the 8th Malaysia Plan to construct a 300-acre, modern sanitary landfill site in Kidurong.

"We have identified the site and the land matter has also been sorted out, " he added.

Mohidin said this at the official briefing of the ISMWS by Mananging Director of the Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, Joerg Domroes held at Grand Auditorium of Wisma Bintulu.

The ISWMS is a modern system of waste management, which employs environmentaly-friendly technology in collection, transportation and disposal of domestic and commercial waste in Bintulu.

The scheduled and hazardous wastes are to  be collected and transported to Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park at Mambong for treatment and disposal.

Mohidin assured there was no extra burden for the rate payers through the implementation of the new system for the collection of demestic wastes.

Meanwhile Joerg in his briefing saind SWM is a pint-venture company formed by Sarawak State Government and Trienekens AG of Germany in 1998 to implement the ISWMS.  This was followed by the setting up of Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. in 1999 and icorporated as the operating company appointed by SWM to develop, implement and operate the ISWMS in Sarawak, begining with the City of Kuching.

"Bintulu is the second town after Kuching City to implement the ISWMS and the branch is the first branch set up under the umbrella of Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn. Bhd. " he said.

He said the BIntulu Branch has a staff force of 54 comprising managers, administors, supervisors and loaders who are all well-trained.  Loaders wear safety apparels and proper uniform when out in the field.

Trienekens has also introduced new fleets of higher capacity trucks, namely 12 units of Compactor Trucks and RoRo Hook Lift Trucks for operational efficeincy.

Joerg later disclosed that Trienekens would be developing and constructing the new landfill in Kidurong onece given the grenn light.

He estimated the cost would take the company some 18 months to complete the project. 

Trienekens also announced that with implementation of the system the collectionschedule will be twice weekly with effect from August 1.

The twice-a-week collection would allow for optimisation and sustanablility fo the system while maintaing highest the hygienic standared.

Trienekens will distribute leaflets to all residents about the scheduled collection, including a guide book on how to dispose off domestic waste in a proper manner.

Also present at the appointment funcion was Chairman of Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd Jurgen Pickenhagen, President of Bintulu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry William Ting Choon Hua, Zaiedy Nor bin Abu Nasir,  Political Secretary to Bintulu's MP Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing JP, repesentatives from government department corporate bodies and private firms.
