| BINTULU: Andreas Arnold Augustine's
class has been interrupted Friday but it was for a pleasant reason when
his principal, Tang Pik Ling, came in with some special guests who wants
to help him.
The guest was Zaiedy Nor Abu Nasir, the political secretary to the Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, SPDP Kidurong division secretary, Jacky Chan Jet Hui and the MP's people service centre's staff, Lawrence Cosmo. The team was delivering a wheel-chair donated by Tiong for the 15-year-old Form 3 student of SMK Assyakirin, who had been suffering from Mystcrnia garvis,a disease due to hormone imbalance that also affecting his ability to walk. Tiong made the donation soon after learning about the plight of the boy who had been down with the disease since three years ago. Andreas' mother, Salimah Edward, was in lost of words to explain her feelings after witnessing his son having the first feel of the wheelchair at the handing over. "What else can I say, but thank you...thank you very much, Datuk Seri," she said when met by reporters after the ceremony. Before having the wheelchair, she said Andreas could only manage to walk several steps before having to rest or clinging on something to keep standing up. At certain time, he also need to be carried
up as he could not mobilise for a long period, while until now, his mother
need to send and bring him back from school.
Prior to getting the disease, she recalled that Andreas was a very active boy and loved playing basketball, while never neglecting his studies. The achievement was also substantiated by Tang, who described him as being a bright boy. He is also the eldest among the four children of Salimah, whose husband, Augustine Antas worked as a labour. Two of her children were still in their primary school studies while another one joined Andreas at SMK Assyakirin at Form One. The sickness that he suffered was diagnosed to take a long time to cure and he had been going on and off to Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching since there is no facility to treat him locally here. Apart from having to support all their children's usual needs, Salimah revealed the additional costs of medications that the family had to bear for Andreas. "Andreas also could not take anything that he likes to eat as doctors had advised him to consume certain types of food. We just try to give what we could as parents who care," she added. |
