22/06/2005: Tiong Receives another Death Threat



BINTULU: The Member of Parliament here received another threat following his recent remarks over certain group of people who attempted to dictate the prices of aluminium cans and certain household items in the local market.
 
Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said had warned that they would kill him should he continue to meddle into the matter and had threatened to use the "services" of gangsters from Sibu and Miri to do so.
 
"I had been told to be careful and to stop mentioning anything about their activities," he said when contacted on Wednesday. He had referred the matter to the police.
 
It was learnt that the group was not happy with the remarks made by Tiong when he was officiating a Chinese function here recently.
 
At the function, Tiong had revealed that this group claiming to be a new gang was involved in mass collections of aluminium cans to which they forced sellers only to deal with them at rates well below the market prices.
 
Adding that the sellers were also threatened  not to sell the cans to other buyers, he also claimed to have heard that a coffeeshop owner here had been beaten up for attempting to stand up against the group.
 
Besides cans, this group were also dictating the supply and prices of cylinder gas and eggs to the retailers.
 
Tiong reiterated that he would not bow down to such threats as the matter had already came to the knowledge of Bukit Aman police.
 
To him, it was a waste of time for this group to make such threat since the police had already assured to take drastic actions against those involved.
 
He also believed that the group could have been worried upon knowing that their illegal activities had been publicly known and made such threat as a way to stop him from unveiling further information about them.
 
The MP insisted that gangsterism should never be allowed to take its roots as the situation would only created public fear and disrupting peace.
 
He also hoped law enforcement agencies here would intensify their activites to curb such illegal activities while making sure that none of their staff were involved.
 
"Should there be any of their staff got involved, necessary actions must be taken to maintain the good names of the agencies," he added.
