Tiong announces Immediate relief assistance to Semanok Fire Victims

Bintulu: The Member of Parliament for Bintulu Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing announced an immediately relief funds including building material for temporary shelter for more than 100 fire victims, made homeless by a midnight blaze on Wednesday fire.

The tragedy resulted a 73 years old man burn to death took place here at Rumah Unjie, 43 Kilometers off Bintulu town. The deceased was said to have attempted to save his valuable belongings after rushing back to his room.

However, Tiong urged the longhouse to immediately determine the date of reconstruction of the proposed new longhouse via its committee meeting. 

Tiong was accompanied by political secretary to Chief Minister Office, Liew Ah Lek, as well as officer of Bintulu MP People service centre, Divisional leaders of Kidurong and Jepak from Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP). 

Some fire victims were seem narrated their hardship in tears to Tiong as majority of fire victims fail to save any belonging in sky licking blaze. 

Beside extended his heartfelt condolence to the deceased’s family, Tiong announced a total of RM 30,000 emergency allocation for the purpose of reconstruction of new long house. However, he disclosed that fund would only be allocated once the date of commencement of construction decided. 

“This is to prevent incident of misusage of similar fund happen again, whereby certain longhouse folks fail to have their new home a few years later after fire tragedy”

For the building material for temporary shelter, Tiong also announced each door for 25 pieces of roofing zinc, plywood (15 pieces per door), 20 rolls of floor mat as well as water tanks for each family. 

As fire victims complained to Tiong that they hadn’t received any drinking water three day after the incident, resulted they had to purchase their own, Tiong disclosed later that water had been immediately delivered following a meeting called at District Office. 

For the coming drought spell seasons in next few months, Tiong said the District Officer also assured water shortage problem facing by residents from rural of suburb areas would be closely monitored, together with relevant department or agencies. 

“For longhouses that face the water shortage problem, they are welcomed to report the matter to the District Office or People Service Centre of Bintulu MP!”

Meanwhile, Tiong also received complaint over the delay arrival of fire brigade during the fire incident, whereby they explained that through the new coastal highway, journey to the longhouse decreased to approximately 30 to 40 minutes. 

It took more than an hour for the firemen to arrive, one of the fire victim said. 

To this, Tiong stressed that it had been urgency for the federal government to approve a new fire brigade or sub-station in Sebauh or Tatau district Bintulu as it was described as the fastest developing city of Sarawak.

From Bintulu, billions if Ringgit had been contributed to federal revenue from its oil & gas industries, Tiong said.

During the visit, an young entrepreneur from SPDP youth Kidurong Division Ting Wih Suh also contributed immediate relief item such as rice, drinking water and instant noodle to 20 families of fire victims.
